MAD Colour Helps The Ulster Museum Set The Record Straight

The MAD Colour team worked with The Ulster Museum in Northern Ireland to help tell a visual and eye-catching story to its visitors through decorative wallcovering designs.

Managed by National Museums Northern Ireland, The Ulster Museum takes guests on a tour of the history of Northern Ireland and beyond. With stunning portrait exhibitions, modern culture references as well as exhibits from across the globe, including Egyptian mummies and dinosaurs. It is a diverse space, with intriguing exhibits that needs to appeal to broad spectrum of visitor.

During the summer, the museum installed two new exhibitions. The first was titled, “The Art of Selling Songs” which told the story of modern music from the area. The second, “Vice Versa” a fashion exhibition highlighting how male and female dress trends have influenced each other through time. These new displays required new artwork that had to fit with the theme and be visually engaging and this is where MAD Colour were able to help.

As design, print and display experts, Minprint have been using Papergraphics print solutions for a number of years. The MAD Colour team to work on this Museum project and started creating ideas, it soon became obvious that Papergraphics new Digimura-1 one-piece wallcovering was the way to go.

“We already supply the National Museums of Northern Ireland with a range of print and installation services from vinyl, to prop/exhibit creation, light boxes and other bespoke items,” explains Jamie McMinnis, Managing Director at MAD Colour, “These two new exhibitions required a range of print and installation solutions including covering large areas with seamless high quality graphics and we chose to use Papergraphics Digimura-1 to cover these areas. The quality of the print and durability of the material gave us the right solution for an impactful and reliable display.”

In the following months, The Ulster Museum asked MAD Colour to use the Digimura-1 in two other areas of the museum, one in their café area, covering a long wall with an historic image of the Museum; and the other in their Egyptian Mummy exhibition.

The decision to use the Papergraphics Digimura-1 wallpaper was simple for Mad Colour. We were able to print the graphics in one seamless piece without joins but it was also a solution that visitors could not pick at or damage, ensuring it would last for a long period of time. It’s also a durable material so would withstand any knocks or scrapes.

“The quality of the material was key as we needed something that would look museum standard.” continues Jamie. “The ability to print in seamless pieces was also important so we could produce high quality seamless graphics. Our client was extremely happy with the end result and we have now installed four Digimura-1 wallcoverings in the Ulster museum in different projects.”

Digimura-1 is the only one-piece digital wallcovering on the market that meets all the legal requirements for commercial and contract interiors. It prints beautifully and is also fully compliant with the Euroclass EN 13501-1 fire-rating. It has a subtle satin finish and its PVC coating offers excellent durability, plus the no-show-through grey back ensures customers can create high quality flat-wall installations of striking feature walls and murals. As it is a one-piece wallcovering, artwork creation is simplified, it requires just one print-run and can help to reduce waste during installation.
